BSA Unit Singles

The Complete Story, including the Triumph Derivatives

Author: Matthew Vale

The BSA unit singles formed the backbone of the company’s model rnage from the late 1950s through to the demise of BSA. The model range coverdd on and off-road models, and provided competition riders with competitive trials bikes and scramblers. Developed from the Triumph Tiger Cub, the bikes had a loyal following and the 250cc models were a learner riders’ favourite for many years. Ironically, a Triumph-badged version of the BSA model, the TR25W Trophy, replaced the Tiger Cub in the Triumph range.

This book has two parts. The first describes the design and development of the range from its inception in 1959 to the demise of BSA in 1973 and beyond, detailing the various models produced each year. This part provides a detailed technical description of the basic designs and the modifications made to these designs throughout. The second part of the book looks at the practicalities of restoring and running a BSA unit single, both by documenting owners’ experiences of owning and riding these bikes in their heyday and by means of a full restoration of a typical bike, carried out especially for this book. The illustrated record of the restoration of a 1960 C15T Competition model identifies the pitfalls that will confront the restorer and the practical modifications that can be made to provide a reliable mount for today’s traffic conditions.

Illustrated throughout with photographs and diagrams, this is a complete and readable resource for all owners of BSA unit singles and their Triumph-badged derivatives, and the perfect companion for anyone considering acquiring or restoring one of these classic British motorcycles.
